Radiologic Technology Program Details

Middlesex Hospital & Middlesex Community College (MxCC) offer a 27-month associate degree program in Radiologic Technology. The program is designed to prepare graduates to pass the national certification test for radiographers, which allow them to enter the medical workforce as well as to qualify for state licensure. National certification as well as State licensure must be obtained to be able to take x-rays in a medical setting.

The Middlesex Radiographer program is designed so the student can complete all general education required courses at the college during the first year (June to May). Additionally, freshman radiology students meet every Friday at Middlesex Hospital for their radiography courses and clinical experience. As soon as the students begin learning specific diagnostic examinations, an extra four hours of clinical experience is assigned each week.

The senior year (June to May) has the student spending 40 hours per week in the clinical environment. Students rotate to various Middlesex Hospital sites for supervised clinical experience and also attend classes at the hospital. The scheduled class time is correlated with clinical education during the week so that students have a balance of morning and afternoon experience. The clinical education schedule is arranged in a logical progression to coincide with didactic learning.

The program includes a final three month internship (June - August) in which students have the opportunity to perfect their clinical, critical thinking, communication, and patient care skills and competencies. During this time, the students are also provided with review classes in preparation for taking the national certification exam.

It is important to note that the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists has a Standard of Ethics and Rules of Ethics that are mandatory and enforceable. These rules shall apply to all technologists and those "persons applying for examination and certification by ARRT in order to become Registered Technologists." See "Rules of Ethics" at www.arrt.org.
