Guided Imagery

What is guided imagery?

Guided imagery (visualization) is a simple technique that can be easily learned. The value of deep relaxation through guided imagery can be beneficial to assist in decreasing stress or pain. By using guided imagery, one can stabilize moods. An example of guided imagery would be if someone was going to have a medical procedure or test and is very anxious. The person would close their eyes, take some slow deep breaths and through visualization, relax one’s mind and body.

Dr. Sherri Bernier, Ed.D., CH, holds a Master’s degree in Counseling and a Doctorate degree in Education. She is the founder of Bernier Hypnosis and Life Enrichment. Dr. Bernier is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Hartford and Post University.  As a 13 year breast cancer survivor, she knows firsthand the cancer journey and has developed the program The Breast Cancer Voyage and the Looking Glass Experience (a visualization technique for those who have lost their hair during chemotherapy treatment). She truly feels the breast cancer voyage need not be taken alone. Through guided imagery, a breast cancer survivor can learn the knowledge needed to make the journey of breast cancer a voyage to inner-strength and growth. One can learn the benefits of self-hypnosis through surgery, chemo, radiation, and reconstruction. In Dr. Bernier’s The Breast Cancer Voyage workshop breast cancer survivors discover techniques to emphasize the total woman, mind, body and spirit, on the path to a new found courage. Dr. Bernier’s master’s research project was entitled, “An Exploration Into Body Image Following Breast Cancer Surgery”. She has facilitated support groups, teaching relaxation techniques to cancer survivors and their spouses.
