If you didn’t come to this year’s Prevention Day, you can experience a piece of it here!  This year’s event was entitled “Healthy Living Through Prevention: Promoting health and well being throug

h prevention and integrative medicine” and was held on Sunday September 19, 2010 at the Saybrook Point Inn in Old Saybrook, Connecticut.

This year’s prevention day promoted health and well-being through prevention and integrative medicine.   A powerful and inspirational keynote address was given by Michael Samuelson.  His presentation, “Awakening: Wake Up and Balance Your Life” invited audience members to “wake up and turn on your radar” and view life in a new perspective to achieve better health.  Mr. Samuelson generously provided his presentation which can be found in the link below.

After the keynote address there were two breakout sessions which included, “The relationship of Healthy Living Through Svaroopa® Yoga” with Svaroopa® Yoga instructor, Elizabeth McKenty, R.N. and “A Mental Fitness Program for Living a Vital and Fulfilling Life” with mental Pilates instructor, Andrew Jeffery.  A variety of exhibits and healthy refreshments were offered throughout the event.  Free ten minute integrative medicine experiential sessions were also offered, including reflexology, Reiki and chair massage.   Attendees were enthusiastic about these sessions and expressed their delight after receiving their choice of session!

Don’t miss next year’s event!

Prevention Day 2009

The Cancer Center’s first annual Healthy Living Through Prevention! event was held at the beautiful Waters Edge Resort in Westbrook on June 28, 2009.  Over 200 attendees enjoyed a wonderful afternoon learning about the importance of health and wellness while experiencing a little pampering.  The event began with the keynote speaker, Bernie Siegel MD, a well-know author who spoke on “The Art of Living and Healing” which was very informative and provoked quite a bit of laughter!

Several breakout sessions featured two Middlesex Hospital Primary Care physicians.  John Carbone, M.D. presented on the integrative approach to behavior change and John Meisel, M.D. discussed the importance of prevention and early detection.  A variety of exhibits such as sun safety, eating smart, importance of moving, breast health, arts and healing, music therapy, acupuncture, bone health and integrative medicine were very interesting and informative.  Healthy refreshments complemented the festivities as well.

One of the most popular offerings was the integrative therapy sessions where attendees enjoyed reiki, reflexology and chair massage first-hand.  What a treat for all!
