Hereditary Risk Assessment Program

The Hereditary Risk Assessment Program provides a risk assessment for patients with concerns about a family history of breast and ovarian cancer. Genetic testing may be indicated based on risk factors in the family history, including multiple individuals with the same type of cancer or cancers occurring at a relatively young age of onset. Genetic testing and risk assessment can provide important information for a patient’s medical management, including guidelines for cancer screening and prevention.

If Breast or Ovarian Cancer Runs In Your Family…it May Be Hereditary.

  • An important part of your mammogram is knowing your family history.  The technologist will ask you for your family and personal history of breast and/or ovarian cancer as we have in the past.
  • Now the information will be reviewed by our Nurse Practitioner to determine if you are at increased risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer.
  • If it is determined that you have an increased risk, you and your health care provider will receive a letter in the mail with information on how to schedule an appointment with the Nurse Practitioner.
  • The visit with the Nurse Practitioner is to discuss your personal and/or family history of cancer, to learn about Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome, and to discuss the option of genetic testing. This visit and testing is covered by most insurance plans.
  • During the visit with the Nurse Practitioner, several recommendations will be made regarding options for screening and prevention.
