NAPBC Accreditation
What makes Middlesex Hospital’s Comprehensive Breast Center special?
Middlesex Hospital’s Comprehensive Breast Center is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). This accreditation makes Middlesex Hospital only one of three accredited breast centers in the state. As such, the Center provides a multidisciplinary, technologically advanced approach to care in an easily accessible location. The comprehensive program provides clinical, diagnostic, and support services to patients, before, during or after their services or treatment.
“We like to think that we stand apart because we follow our patients a little longer than other Centers. We will follow a patient throughout the entire plan of care.” - Patricia O’Brien, nurse navigator, RN, OCN, CBCN.
“Our goal is to deliver the best possible care to the patient.” - Patricia O’Brien, nurse navigator, RN, OCN, CBCN.
The NAPBC: Working to Ensure the Quality of Your Breast Care
The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) is a national coalition of professional healthcare organizations dedicated to the highest quality of care for women and men diagnosed with diseases of the breast. The NAPBC promotes a holistic approach to treatment for patients diagnosed with diseases of the breast, and provides a framework for a continuum of care that meets the needs of the whole person and not just the disease.
Centers that seek NAPBC accreditation do so voluntarily. Participation includes completion of a comprehensive on-line application and an on-site inspection by an NAPBC surveyor who verifies the availability of 17 components of care, and validates compliance with 27 evidence-based standards of care required to achieve NAPBC accreditation. To maintain accreditation the center is required to document ongoing compliance with the standards on an annual basis and undergo an on-site inspection every three years. Patients and the public have access to the NAPBC website to search for accredited centers near their home and may print a comprehensive breast center profile unique to that center.
Today’s internet savvy consumers search for, and expect, the best multidisciplinary care available. Surveying and accrediting more than 200 breast centers since December 2008, enthusiasm for NAPBC accreditation continues to spread across the United States. An ever increasing number of centers will become accredited and patients seeking care at these centers will benefit from the best multidisciplinary breast care.
The NAPBC is a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. To learn more about the NAPBC, visit the NAPBC website at http://www.accreditedbreastcenters.org.
