Quality Measures in Emergency Services

In early 2004, Middlesex Hospital was one of the first hospitals in Connecticut to formally share its quality performance information with the public. Based on independent evaluation and comparisons with nationally recognized "standards" for effective treatment, Middlesex performed favorably in many key areas, including patient satisfaction.

In fact, the emergency departments at the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Center in Essex and the Middlesex Hospital Marlborough Medical Center had very impressive results for the year, both in the 99th percentile of the national sample.

Another example of our commitment to providing — and measuring — quality care, is our adoption of a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiative, the process by which we measure, analyze and improve quality on a continuous basis. CQI teams identify areas in which there are opportunities to improve care, such as volume of cases or cases that are considered high-risk.
