Preparing for Your Birth

The day your baby is born will be one of the most important and most memorable days of your life — so we do everything we can to make sure your entire stay goes smoothly and according to all your plans. That means that everything that’s important to you — whether it’s having up to 4 guests with you during the birth, using a midwife, experiencing a water birth, or even giving birth in the dark (yes, we’ve done it) — is equally as important to us. The Middlesex Hospital Pregnancy and Birth Center is committed to doing everything possible to accommodate your desired birth plan.

Your Birth Plan

All new moms are encouraged to create a Pregnancy and Birth Center Plan that details their personal wishes and discuss it with their primary care provider prior to their arrival at the hospital. Our staff is very flexible and will do everything in our power to support your plan and ensure a safe, happy delivery in a supportive, caring atmosphere.

Please take a moment to review some of the services and procedures that may be part of your experience with us, and consider how you would like apply them to your personalized plan.

  • Activity in Labor: Our birth center is specially designed to allow you to walk during labor, a natural way to help your baby move down the birth canal. We’ll also do our best to accommodate any other wishes you may have, including tub baths, rocking chairs, using a birthing ball and laboring tubs, all of which can be arranged through your health provider.
  • Eating in Labor: Sips of clear fluids and ice chips are used to prevent dehydration and discomfort during the first stage of labor. For safety reasons, your stomach must be empty of solid food in case a Cesarean birth is necessary.
  • Fetal Monitoring: We’ll initially monitor your baby’s heartbeat for 20-30 minutes, and then intermittently every 15-30 minutes after that, as your condition allows. For an extra level of comfort and freedom, we use special monitoring equipment that allows you to walk around the birth center while still being monitored. Internal fetal monitoring is not used unless you or your baby needs closer monitoring.
  • Anesthesia/Pain Medication: Our experienced team will support you with comfort measures, like breathing techniques, massages and position changes. If pain medication becomes necessary, and you wish to use it, narcotic pain relievers (most commonly Stadol) are available, and we have 24-hour in-house anesthesia capabilities for patients who need epidural administration.
  • Pushing During Labor: During the pushing stage of labor, we recommend frequent position changes — such as squatting, side lying and lying with your legs supported — to keep you as comfortable as possible. Our birthing beds have squatting bar attachments, can be adjusted to many different positions to aid in pushing, and can even include a mirror if you’d like to watch your baby’s head when it crowns.
  • Episiotomy: We do not routinely perform an episiotomy (an incision in the perineum) unless you request it or the birth process needs to be sped up for your baby’s safety. Our team will use perineal massages and warm soaks, and will encourage controlled pushing to reduce the chance of an episiotomy. If one becomes necessary, we’ll use ice packs, Witch Hazel pads and Sitz baths to ease any discomfort.
