Middlesex Health Behavioral Health Services offers comprehensive, multidisciplinary, expert-guided training in professional psychology.


Hours + Time Requirements
Our doctoral internship program is based at the Middlesex Health Center for Behavioral Health, a full-service outpatient facility located at the Middlesex Hospital campus of Middlesex Health* in Middletown, CT.The doctoral internship is a full-time (i.e., 40 hours/week) training and supervised experience accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).

Interns complete 2,000 hours over twelve months (52 weeks), beginning in September and running through August. A total of two weeks for vacation and sick time are allotted during the year, with options to flex or make up missed time as needed.

Program Size + Tracks
Two interns are selected per training year, one in each of the following tracks. Interns in both tracks collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to train in assessment/evaluation, individual therapy, family therapy, and group therapy; they also consult with psychiatric staff on medication management.

Track #1 - Child/Adolescent
Interns in the child/adolescent track will work in the Family Advocacy Program outpatient clinic, a community mental health center that provides services for children, adolescents, and families.

Track #2 - Adult
Interns in the adult track will work in the Outpatient Center for Behavioral Health, a community mental health center that provides services for individuals 18 and older.

Our multidisciplinary team comprises psychiatrists, psychologists, APRNs, clinical social workers, and other mental health care staff.

Diverse Behavioral Health Settings

Depending on an intern's interests, there are opportunities for additional exposure/training in Middlesex Health's other behavioral health departments. These include several levels of psychiatric services, including intensive outpatient, partial hospital, inpatient, crisis intervention, and in-home therapeutic services.

Health Equity Leadership + Transgender Medicine

Middlesex Health has earned designation as a Human Rights Campaign LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader. Further training opportunities are available through our Gender Affirmation Program, which serves transgender members of our community.

Specialized Evaluations

Interns in the adult track may also have opportunities for specialized evaluations (i.e., bariatric surgery candidates).

Trainings

In addition to direct care, interns participate in various training opportunities within the training program and hospital setting, covering the nine areas of profession-wide competencies.

Get Directions

We are not currently giving in-person tours of Middlesex Health facilities to keep our applicants, staff, and patients as safe as possible. However, we will also consider virtual interviews in cases where travel restrictions prevent in-person interviews.
