100 Top Hospitals in the United States
Middlesex Hospital continues to distinguish itself as one of the finest hospitals in the United States. Most notably, the Hospital has been designated four times (2004, 2007, 2008, 2011) as one of the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®, most recently as part of the 2011 Thomson Reuters National Benchmarks for Success study.
ANCC Magnet Hospital
In June of 2001, Middlesex Hospital became Connecticut’s first and only Magnet hospital. This designation is awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), an arm of the American Nurses Association, to recognize nursing excellence. The Hospital was re-designated as a Magnet hospital in 2005, 2010 and most recently in 2014. making Middlesex one of only 20 hospitals in the WORLD to achieve this designation four times in a row. This recognition has greatly enhanced the Hospital’s recruitment and retention of top nursing professionals.
Press Ganey Summit Award
The Emergency Departments at both the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Center and the Middlesex Hospital Marlborough Medical Center have been recipients of this
award for customer satisfaction multiple times. In 2012, the Middlesex Hospital Marlborough Medical Center received the Press Ganey Summit Award for an impressive seventh year in a row. The Summit Award recognizes top-performing facilities that have sustained the highest level (at least at the 95th percentile) of customer satisfaction for three or more consecutive years.
HealthGrades® Safest Hospitals in America
In its seventh annual study of quality and clinical excellence, HealthGrades, a leading independent health care ratings organization, identified 270 hospitals out of 5,000 nationwide that collectively had a 28 percent lower mortality rate and 8 percent lower complication rate than the national average. The full list reflects the top five percent of hospitals nationwide. Middlesex Hospital was one of only seven Connecticut hospitals on the HealthGrades list.
Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval®
The Middlesex Hospital Center for Joint Replacement & Spine Surgery has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for its Joint Replacement Program by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care. The certification award recognizes our dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards.
Consumer Reports Safest in the State
Middlesex Hospital was the highest scoring hospital in CT in the Consumer Reports hospital safety rankings in the first two years it has been done. This report ranks hospitals based on six categories: ability to limit infections, rate of readmissions, overuse of scanning, communication and mortality rates.
Hospital Compare Core Measures
Middlesex Hospital scored 100% on all AMI (heart attack) measures, 99% on pneumonia measures (compared to national averages of 97% and 95% for the two measures), 100%, 95% and 89% on heart failure measures (compared to national averages of 99%, 96% and 94%), 100% on 3 SCIP measures, 99% on 1, 98% on 1, 96% on 2 (compared to 95%-100% national average on individual measures). Middlesex is above the state and national averages in categories of “Overall Recommended Care,” “Overall Heart Attack Care,” “Overall Pneumonia Care,” and “Overall Surgical Care.”
Hospital Compare: Readmissions
Middlesex Hospital is in the national top 10% for 30-day readmission rates for combined heart failure, heart attack and pneumonia, the only hospital in CT identified as better than the U.S. National Rate for pneumonia readmissions.
Hospital Compare: Mortalities
Middlesex Hospital is one of seven hospitals in CT identified as better than the U.S. National Rate in heart failure mortalities. We are in the national top ten percent for heart attack and heart failure inpatient mortality rate.
HealthGrades® Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence
Middlesex Hospital was recognized in a study conducted by HealthGrades, which ranked 5,000 U.S. hospitals based on mortality and complication rates compiled from Medicare data.
HealthGrades® Top Hospitals for Emergency Care Designation
Middlesex Hospital has achieved the HealthGrades Emergency Medicine Excellence Award three years in a row. The puts Middlesex Hospital among the top five percent of hospitals in the country for clinical outcomes for patients admitted through the emergency room. HealthGrades® America’s Best 100 Hospitals Middlesex Hospital was named one of HealthGrades first-ever America’s best 100 hospitals in 2012 and again in 2013. American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Silver and Gold “Get With the Guidelines” Achievement Awards
Middlesex Hospital has received both the Silver and Gold Plus achievement awards for using evidence-based guidelines to provide the best possible stroke care to patients.
Becker’s 100 Great Community Hospitals
In 2012 and 2013, Middlesex Hospital was named to Becker’s Hospital Review’s “100 Great Community Hospitals” list, which recognizes high-performing hospitals with fewer than 550 beds.
“Most Wired” Hospitals in the United States
Middlesex Hospital was recognized as one of the nation’s Most Wired hospitals, according to the results of the 2014 Most Wired Survey released in the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. The nation’s Most Wired hospitals are leveraging the adoption and use of health information technology (IT) to improve performance in a number of areas, according to Health Care’s Most Wired 2014 Survey.
National Leadership Award by the National Lung Cancer Program
Middlesex Hospital was given a National Leadership Award by the National Lung Cancer Program in November 2012 for the development of the low-dose CT lung cancer screening program. High Reliability Organization Initiative Middlesex Hospital is one of 14 hospitals in CT who are participating in Level 3 High Reliability Organization training in collaboration with the Connecticut Hospital Association.
