The First Step: Genetic Counseling
During your visit, our hereditary risk assessment practitioner will go over your personal and/or family history of cancer in detail, provide information about Hereditary Breast Syndromes, and discuss your options for genetic testing. Our hereditary risk assessment practitioner will also make several recommendations for screening, preventing, and/or managing breast cancer risk.
Because the results are proven to aid in the early detection and intervention of breast cancer, the visit and testing is covered by most insurance plans.
The risk assessment practitioner will take the time to discuss your family history and answer any questions you have, so before the meeting you should prepare by:
- Collecting your personal medical records, if available
- Documenting your family’s medical history
- Creating a list of questions to ask
- Asking someone to attend the meeting with you, if you wish, to help take notes
