da Vinci® Robot-Assisted Thoracic Surgery
da Vinci® Robot-Assisted lobectomy
If your doctor recommends lung cancer surgery to treat lung cancer, you may be a candidate for a safe, effective and minimally invasive procedure – da Vinci® thoracic surgery. Thoracic surgery involves surgery on the organs located within the thorax, or chest. During a lobectomy sugery, the surgeon removes a "lobe" of the lung – a piece of the lung that has cancer. Using the most advanced technology available, the da Vinci® Surgical System provides your Middlesex Hospital surgeon with superior vision, precision and control, allowing for improved access inside the chest cavity.

Because da Vinci® thoracic surgery is performed through tiny incisions, spreading the ribs to access the lung is avoided. da Vinci® is minimally invasive, unlike thoracotomy - traditional lung surgery - which requires a large incision, and often a long recovery.
Benefits of a robotic lobectomy
Potential benefits of a da Vinci® Lobectomy include:
- Low cancer recurrence in advanced disease
- Less pain
- Less blood loss
- Fewer complications
- Shorter hospital stay
- Quicker return to the things you love
About the da Vinci® SI Surgical System
The da Vinci® SI Surgical System is designed to provide surgeons with enhanced capabilities, including high-definition 3D vision and a magnified view. Your doctor controls the da Vinci® Surgical System, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside your body.
Though it is often called a “robot,” da Vinci® cannot act on its own. The thoracic surgery is performed entirely by your Middlesex Hospital surgeon, and complimented by the advanced technology of the da Vinci® robot. This allows for even very complex lobectomy procedures to be performed through a few tiny incisions. As a result, you may be able to get back to life faster without the usual recovery following major surgery.
The da Vinci® Surgical System has been used successfully worldwide in hundreds of thousands of procedures to date. Middlesex Hospital is building one of the most comprehensive robot assisted surgical programs in New England, offering prostate cancer surgery, sleep apnea surgery, gynecological surgery and thoracic surgery.
