What is aquatic therapy?

Aquatic therapy is any form of therapy that takes place in water - it is typically done in a pool that has been heated to a comfortable temperature. 

What conditions are treated with aquatic therapy?

Aquatic therapy can be used to help treat many conditions, including but not limited to:

  • arthritis
  • balance deficits
  • fibromyalgia
  • neurological disorders
  • orthopedic injuries
  • osteoporosis
  • pain
  • weakness

It is also helpful for patients who have recently undergone joint replacement surgery.

What is the Exercise Maintenance Program (EMP)?

The EMP provides patients with the opportunity to participate in low cost, post-therapy exercise.

Who is eligible to participate?

The EMP is open to patients who have completed their therapy but wish to continue exercising with a custom program developed by their therapist.

Is there professional support available?

Yes! One of our licenced professionals - either a Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, or Assistant - is always available to provide supervision and answer questions.

If your balance is impaired or you are at risk for falls, you may benefit from physical and/or occupational therapy.

How do physical therpists assist with balance impairment/fall risk reduction?

Your therapist will evaluate your balance impairment and develop a unique treatment plan to meet your individual needs. With balance retraining, exercise, and education, your fall risk can be reduced.

What causes balance impairment?

A variety of conditions can cause issues with balance, including:

  • aging
  • chronic health conditions
  • deconditioning (loss of function or ability)
  • mobility problems
  • neurological disorders
  • sports injuries
  • vestibular disorders
  • visual changes
What are the risk factors for falls?

You may be at higher risk of a fall if you have:

  • difficulty standing or walking
  • dizziness
  • drops in blood pressure
  • foot numbness
  • loss of balance
  • pain
  • past or recent falls
  • taking four or more medications
  • vision and hearing difficulties

What is hand therapy?

Hand therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of your upper extremities. Many different activities - from work to recreation - can lead to hand and arm injuries, but our Physical and Occupational Therapists are specially trained to assess and treat your condition.

Our Certified Lymphedema Specialists are specially trained to help you cope with swelling in your extremities due to the removal or blockage of parts of the lymphatic system. Although lymphedema is not curable, it can be managed, and our team is committed to meeting your unique needs through our innovative Lymphedema Rehabilitation Program.

What is the McKenzie Method?

The McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) is a specific assessment process intended for all musculoskeletal problems. This system allows you to learn the principles of symptom management, so that you can be in control of your own care. This reduces dependency on medical intervention.

 
What musculoskeletal problems can be managed with the McKenzie Method?

A range of issues with the musculoskeletal system - or issues related to muslces, bones, and joints - can be addressed, including:

  • arthritis
  • degenerative disc disease
  • intermittent numbness in hands or feet
  • muscle spasms
  • pain in the back, neck and extremities (i.e., shoulder, knee, ankle etc.)
  • sacroiliac joint pain
  • sciatica

What is the Kinesio Taping® Method?

The Kinesio Taping® Method is a rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process. It can provide support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting mobility. This latex-free tape can be used to:

  • enhance performance
  • facilitate lymphatic drainage
  • prevent injury

What is the Graston Technique®?

The Graston Technique® is an innovative method to address scar tissue and fascial restrictions. Highly-trained therapists use specially-designed stainless steel instruments to detect and treat areas of fibrosis or chronic inflammation.

What is persistent pain?

Pain is considered persistent or chronic if it is present for more than three months. Persistent pain occurs when your nerves continue to send pain signals to the brain even after tissue healing has occurred. 

  • Pain Sensations: Aching, stabbing, tingling that ranges from sharp and well-defined to dull and vague
  • Related Symptoms: Fatigue, irritability, sensitivity to touch and temperature, sleep disturbances
  • Impact on Quality of Life: Limited social activities, fewer hours worked, inability to complete household tasks
How can Physical and Occupational Therapy help with persistent pain?

Your therapists can help you manage persistent pain through an individualized plan of care tailored to your symptoms and physical abilities. This plan may include:

What is pulmonary therapy?

Pulmonary therapy consists of techniques and strategies to reduce shortness of breath - and related anxiety - for patients with certain conditions.

What conditions cause this shortness of breath?

Shortness of breath is a symptom of many lung diseases, including:

  • asthma
  • chronic bronchitis
  • COPD
  • emphysema
  • lung cancer
  • pulmonary fibrosis

You may also experience shortness of breath during recovery from lung surgery.

A wide range of speech, language, and voice concerns can be addressed with carefully-implemented evaluations, therapies, and dietary changes.
