When It's Time

When the big day arrives, the first thing you should do is call your doctor’s office or answering service — and they will give you specific instructions about your admission to the hospital for your delivery. You will come directly to our Pregnancy & Birth Center on the 3rd floor of Middlesex Hospital (28 Crescent St., Middletown, CT 06457). If it’s between the hours of 5am and 8pm, you should enter the hospital through the main lobby — but if it’s between 8pm and 5am, please enter through the Emergency Department entrance and come directly to the Pregnancy & Birth Center.

We encourage you to bring any items that will help you stay focused and relaxed during labor, including healthy snack foods, toiletries, a breast feeding pillow, sleepwear and changes of clothes (don’t forget about clothes for dad!). You should leave all of your jewelry and money — except for small amounts for miscellaneous purchases — at home, because we cannot be responsible for looking after valuable items. However, our staff can help you make arrangements to leave valuables in the hospital safe if you wish.

You’ll stay in the same private labor-delivery-recovery-postpartum (LDRP) room throughout your time with us. All of our rooms have own private bath/shower, refrigerator, TV, DVD player and a sofa couch for dad to sleep on — and there will be plenty of room for your family and friends.

Once you’re settled in, we’ll monitor your baby’s heartbeat for 20-30 minutes, and then intermittently every 15-30 minutes after that, as your condition allows. Our monitoring equipment allows you to walk around the birth center while still being monitored, giving you some extra comfort and freedom — and helping the baby work its way down the birth canal at the sam

During Delivery

During your delivery, everything that’s important to you is important to us. Our entire team will do everything they possibly can to accommodate your wishes and follow your personal birth plan. So, if you want to have up to 4 guests with you during the birth, use a midwife, experience a water birth, or just about anything else within reason, we’re flexible enough to make it happen.

Your team of doctors and nurses are highly skilled and completely dedicated to providing the hands-on care and personal attention you and your baby need during your delivery. They’ll use a variety of techniques to keep you comfortable — from massages to breathing techniques to position changes — and, if you should require it, we have anesthesiologists available 24 hours a day to administer pain medication. If you need to have a Cesarean birth, we have two fully equipped surgical suites within our Pregnancy & Birth Center, and everyone necessary to perform the Cesarean delivery is available within a moment’s notice.
