Frequently Asked Questions by Families
How do you welcome and orient new residents?
How do you welcome and orient new residents to the assisted living community?
From invitations to our afternoon socials to a personal escort to the dining room and introductions to other residents at the table, we make it a point to personally help new residents feel at home within the One MacDonough assisted living community. Our Program Department will do everything they can to make joining our assisted living community as easy and as comfortable as possible.
My mother requires a special diet. Can you provide assistance with dietary needs?
The menus at One MacDonough Place have been reviewed by a dietician for their nutritional values. Our nursing staff and chefs work together with family and physicians to provide the best possible diet to meet residents' needs.
What type of outings and activities do you offer within the One MacDonough assisted living community?
In addition to our regularly scheduled shopping trips, we have weekly excursions to museums, shoreline attractions, lunches, and special events such as parades, fairs and concerts. Our Program Director will meet with each resident to discuss and plan activities around his or her interests.
Also, as part of our assisted living services, offer a Personal Errand Service to all residents. And each afternoon, we host a social hour with complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres. Evenings bring the chance to gather for a movie, or residents may choose to relax in their own apartment and watch it on our cable TV station.
Our Program Director and his staff are joined by a wonderful team of volunteers who bring a dimension of care and love to our residents that money could not buy. They enjoy visiting, playing cards, gardening, and sharing other activities with our residents. Residents are also encouraged to join the One MacDonough Singers, who perform in the community.
What are the qualifications of your staff?
We have two Registered Nurses on staff each weekday and one RN on the weekends. An RN is on call 24 hours a day. Our Personal Care Attendants, (PCAs), are certified by the State of Connecticut and provide 24 hour staffing each day. We have access to the services of Middlesex Hospital, including health specialists and therapists.
How is assisted living regulated?
In Connecticut, each licensed assisted living community undergoes an extensive survey every two years to assure that facilities adhere to the regulations and that each resident is provided with a high level of service. Additionally, One MacDonough has a quality assurance committee comprised of members of Middlesex Hospital’s medical staff and Home Heath Care staff. We benchmark our assisted living community with other communities to strive for the highest possible service levels for our residents.
What types of assisted living services are available?
There is an array of services available to residents of One MacDonough. As part of the Middlesex Health System, we have a strong emphasis on quality with unsurpassed resources and benefits available to residents and families. Our continuum includes laboratory services, social services, physical therapy, homecare services, hospice program and much more.
Is your community conveniently located near shopping, restaurants, hospital, etc?
One MacDonough Place is located in the heart of Middletown, Connecticut, within walking distance to Main Street, which offers over 40 restaurants of many different nationalities — a hit with residents and visitors alike. The Inn at Middletown, a restored historical building with first class amenities, and the cultural opportunities of Wesleyan University and the Green Street Arts Center, are also close by.
Do you have physicians on staff?
Middlesex Hospital has over 400 physicians with specialties in many fields including gerontology. Some physicians, physician assistants and other health care providers visit One MacDonough Place to make it easier for residents, especially during winter, including a podiatrist and message therapist. However, you may choose any physician, in and out of our system, as your medical needs arise.
Are visitors welcome anytime?
Since this is a resident's home, their guests may visit anytime, day or night. Our doors are open while the receptionist is on duty from 8:30 AM until 8:30 PM daily. During off-hours, simply pick up the phone in the foyer and a personal care attendant will open the door for you. Middlesex Hospital Security walks our campus throughout the evening hours to provide extra security for our residents and staff.
Are pets allowed in the assisted living community?
Pet allowance is determined on a case-by-case basis. There must be a plan in place to provide for their care. We always encourage families and friends with pets to bring them for visits. Please note that pets are not permitted in our public or common areas.
