Redefine Aging

Each May, Older Americans Month recognizes the contributions older adults make to our society. This year, the theme is “Connect, Create & Contribute.”

Now, more than ever, older adults are connecting, creating and contributing well into their 90s – and sometimes longer. This demonstrates that the concept of aging is changing. When you think about what age 75 looked like a decade or two ago and what it looks like today, you probably have two very different images in mind.

In the past, aging was a passive activity. Older adults didn’t participate in aging. They simply aged, allowing nature to take its course. Today, aging involves seniors who make a conscious decision to stay active. They choose how to live their best lives.

By living an engaged, enriched and healthy lifestyle, you can redefine aging. Take charge of your life by advocating for yourself and actively participating in your care. Connect with your peers by joining a social club or going to your local senior center. Start your own group that focuses on bowling, cards or going for lunch. Social interaction is an important part of good health and longevity. Additionally, friends and family provide emotional support during stressful times.

Create by pursuing your hobbies and interests. Consider a new hobby. Have you always wanted to learn to play the guitar or take photos? Take lessons. Sign up for a class. Many towns offer classes for older adults at reduced rates. The arts can inspire an aging mind and body by providing meaning and joy. It can also provide an outlet for creativity.

Contribute by sharing your knowledge and wisdom with your community. Consider volunteering or mentoring. Contributing to your community can provide meaning and purpose for your life, which helps with healthy aging.

Do your part to connect, create and contribute. Redefine aging!
